Greater Scaup Migration


Like Red Necked Grebes and Trumpeter Swans, the Greater Scaups migrate to Alaska to their breeding grounds during the summer.

In the fall, they fly back south to Canada or Eastern United States where they spend the winter months.





Water Ballet Dancer


This Greater Scaup flaps its wings like a Ballet Dancer.







Potter Marsh, Anchorage

Two species of Scaups can be found in Alaska: the Greater Scaup & the Lesser Scaup.
The Greater Scaup is larger, with a wingspan around 75 cm. Males have a black head with a greenish sheen, while females have light brown feathers. They have a blue bill and yellow eyes.
