Mount Redoubt, an Active Volcano

Redoubt is one of the active Alaskan volcanoes. With an elevation of 10,197 feet, Redoubt is a stratovolcano located 103 miles south west of Anchorage.

Sunset at Redoubt

The sun slowly sets on Turnagain Arm, painting a peaceful pastel landscape around the rumbling volcano. The heavy plume of ash against the pink sky is the only reminder of the fury of Mother Nature.

Eighty miles away, on this side of the water, the rumbling is muted and the ash is drifting away, providing a fragile sense of relief that Anchorage will be spared... tonight...

But long time Alaskan residents
know too well that each day
might see a different outcome.

Prior to this current burst of volcanic activity, Mount Redoubt erupted in December 1989, with unrest persisting until August 1990.
